Teams take to the road for Playoffs!

BURBANK –  Bell-Jeff, Burroughs, Providence all play league champs in first round of CIF.

With Burbank High not fielding a boys’ volleyball team this season, Burroughs realized it would have to finish among the top three in the six-team Pacific League to get an automatic postseason berth.

Unfortunately for the Indians, they placed fourth.

With some qualify wins this season, and other matches where they pushed talented teams to the brink, the Indians were hoping to get a little respect and earn an at-large berth into the CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs.

Burroughs was indeed rewarded Monday, as it was included in the Division II bracket.

The Indians will likely have their hands full in a 7 p.m. first-round match Friday. They will have to take on Pac-7 League champion Arroyo Grande (13-1) on the road.

“We had only one returner from last season, and he had to quit for medical reasons,” Burroughs Coach Joel Brinton said. “So, we’re supposed to be in a rebuilding year. And to make it to the playoffs is great for us. We’re excited to be in the playoffs.”

In just its third year of existence, this is the second straight season Burroughs has made the postseason.

“We have been playing our best volleyball the last two weeks, and I think we’re peaking at the right time,” Brinton said.

The Indians (11-8) are coming off a solid effort last week against Claremont, the Pacific League champ. Burroughs pushed the host Wolfpack to five games and had two match-point opportunities in the fourth game before losing.

Along with Burroughs, Bellarmine-Jefferson and Providence will also have to hit the road for 7 p.m. first-round contests Friday.

The Guards (10-11), who finished third in the Santa Fe League, will take on host Arrowhead Christian (12-1), the Christian League champion, in a Division V match.

The Pioneers (12-8), No. 3 from the Liberty League, will play at Windward (13-2), the Alpha League champion, in a Division IV contest.
