Bell-Jeff’s Cervantes Helping Stanislaus

jocelyn_collegeJocelyn Cervantes (Bellarmine-Jefferson, 2012) sophomore, Cal State Stanislaus women’s volleyball: The decorated high school player is seeing her share of playing time and getting her share of swings at the outside hitter position during her sophomore season.

Cervantes, a three-time All-CIF Southern Section selection and two-time Santa Cruz Player of the Year pick, has started nine of the team’s 17 matches. She is fourth among Warriors players in points scored with 104.5 and is also fourth in kills with 94. In addition, Cervantes has totaled 41 digs.

Cervantes’ best effort came on Sept. 29 in a 25-22, 25-20, 25-19 loss to host Cal State San Bernardino in which she tallied a season-best 12 kills. She also had 11 kills in match against Cal State East Bay and 10 in contests against Cal State University Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A.

Heading into Friday’s contest against visiting Cal State East Bay, Cal State Stanislaus is 2-15 and 2-15 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

jocelyn-and-tarynTaryn Nelson (Bellarmine-Jefferson, 2013) freshman, L.A. Mission College women’s volleyball: Nelson, an All-CIF Southern Section and Santa Cruz League Player of the Year for the Guards, is leading the way on offense this season for the Eagles.

Nelson has emerged as one of Mission’s go-to player on offense as an outside hitter, playing and starting in all the team’s 11 matches. She leads the Eagles with 152 kills to go along with 70 digs.

Right behind Nelson is a former all-league player from Burroughs, freshman middle blocker Katie Dick, who has 150 kills.

Mission’s last match was Friday and the Eagles fell to Moorpark College, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 25-19. Nelson had 13 kills and Dick added nine in the loss.

In a home match Oct. 15 against Allan Hancock, Nelson tallied 23 kills in a 25-10, 25-16, 20-25, 25-12 victory. Dick contributed 16 kills, as the two combined for 39 of the Eagles’ 47 total kills in the contest.

The Eagles have a record of 7-4, 2-2 in the Western State Conference North. Mission next plays Wednesday at Santa Barbara City College.
