london_bjbBELL-JEFF – The Guards look to have more athletes out for both of their teams this season after struggling with low numbers a year ago.

Unfortunately, some of the boys’ team’s best athletes are also players on the school’s boys’ basketball team, which is still in the midst of a deep run in the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

“We just have to wait for those guys to finish with basketball before they join us,” coach Jim Couch said. “But we should have some pretty good athletes on the boys’ side, especially in the sprints, and we will have more girls competing, whereas we were just in survival mode last year.”

After basketball is finished, returning to lead the boys should be decorated senior sprinter London Webster, who captured Santa Fe League titles in the 100 and 200 last season. Another basketball player, senior DeVaughn Roberts, will also be called upon to score points in the sprints for Bell-Jeff.

Another pair of hoops standouts, junior Marco Escribano and senior Clark Thomas, will team up with Webster and Roberts to make a strong relay team.

In the distance events, sophomore Grayson Goss should lead the way for the Guards.

On the girls’ side, the Guards should have a formidable 1-2 punch in the distance events with a pair of freshmen, Caitlyn Couch and Valerie Zavala.
