Football Preview St. Genevieve!

BELL-JEFF VS. ST. GENEVIEVE

WHEN: 7 p.m. today.

WHERE: Sun Valley Poly High.

RECORDS: The Guards are 2-5, 0-1 in league; the Valiants are 4-3, 0-1.

LAST WEEK: Bell-Jeff lost to St. Anthony, 28-6; St. Genevieve lost to Salesian, 17-0.

OUTLOOK: With just three more Santa Fe League games remaining, Bell-Jeff can’t afford to suffer a loss against the Valiants if it hopes to keep its postseason aspirations alive. The Guards limp into the game after suffering three straight losses. The locals have had their problems on defense, as opposing squads have had little problem moving the ball against the Guards in recent weeks. One positive coming in for Bell-Jeff is that St. Genevieve is second-to-last in points scored in league, as it averages 22.4 a contest. Unfortunately for Bell-Jeff, it is last in the league in points scored, averaging 19.4. One of the highlights for the Bell-Jeff offense has been the play of senior Macah Shirley. Shirley, who has played running back, wide receiver and quarterback — along with defensive back — has scored 12 total touchdowns. Along with 62 carries for 743 yards on the ground, Shirley also has 20 catches for 358 yards. He is also the team’s leading tackler.

SOMETHING INTERESTING: Two of St. Genevieve’s victories have come by one point, and by the same score (21-20 over Flintridge Prep and 21-20 over Marshall Fundamental.

High School Football Preview!

BELL-JEFF VS. LUCERNE VALLEY
• WHEN: 7 p.m. today – Memorial Field (Burroughs High).

• RECORDS: The Guards, 2-2; the Mustangs are 1-2.

• LAST WEEK: Bell-Jeff defeated Frazier Mountain, 20-19; Lucerne Valley beat Calvary Christian, 61-6.

• OUTLOOK: Bell-Jeff has had its ups and downs so far this season in four games. When they play well, the Guards have been impressive. However, when they’ve played poorly, the Guards have struggled. They will get a chance to earn their third win in a nonleague game against the Mustangs. Lucerne Valley likes to keep the ball on the ground, and it plays more of a smashmouth style of football. The running game is led by senior running back Travis Everand. He has 87 carries for 485 yards — including 198 in last week’s win — and seven touchdowns. He is averaging 5.58 yards a carry and 161.7 yards a game.

Junior running back Ruben Navarro has rushed 33 times for 187 yards and has two touchdowns. Bell-Jeff has had some problems defending against the run. The Guards counter with a solid running game of their own. Senior running back Bronson Ketchem has 62 carries for 323 yards and senior Elliott Dennis has 34 carries for 198 yards and three touchdowns.

• SOMETHING INTERESTING: Last season, Bell-Jeff defeated Lucerne Valley on the road, 43-7.
