OJAI - Despite holding a four-point lead at the end of the first quarter, the visiting Guards couldn’t overcome Andre Frazier being sidelined with foul trouble in the second and fell in the quarterfinals at Thacher High in Ojai.
Besant Hill (24-2), the No. 2 seed, scored 28 second-quarter points to take a 38-28 halftime lead. Although the No. 7 Guards (19-6) cut the deficit to two in the third, Ivan Matip (27 points) and Yannick Atanga (16 points) were too much down the stretch.
Kevin Yuenyongsakul led the Guards with 21 points, including five 3-pointers. Aaron Cosme added nine points and Chris Issakhanian contributed eight points for Bell-Jeff.

Football Preview - Bell-Jeff Vs. St. Monica!
BELL-JEFF VS. ST. MONICA
• WHEN: 7 p.m. Saturday.
• WHERE: Memorial Field (Burroughs High).
• RECORDS: The Guards are 4-3, 0-1 in the Santa Fe League; the Mariners are 2-3, 0-1.
• LAST WEEK: Bell-Jeff lost to St. Genevieve, 41-38; St. Monica lost to Salesian, 41-18
• OUTLOOK: The Guards are coming off a solid performance last week against a talented St. Genevieve team. Bell-Jeff coach Rolando Aguirre said the team will not get back the services of starting quarter Philip Diaz. Aguirre confirmed that Diaz, who suffered a concussion Sept. 26 in a nonleague loss to Frazier Mountain, is no longer with the team. Senior backup Brenden Alferez has done an admirable job taking over the signal-caller duties. “Brenden is our man for the rest of the season,” Aguirre said. “He has done a pretty good job for us.” Alferez has completed 29 of 53 passes for 119 yards and has two touchdowns and two interceptions. The St. Monica offense is led by junior quarterback Matthew Partyka. “They run a no-huddle offense and they like to throw the ball,” Aguirre said.
“They like to throw the ball a lot. But we have a special defense for them. Our secondary just has to step up and help us out.” The Mariners’ offense has been fairly successful, as it averages 31.6 points a game. In comparison, the Bell-Jeff offense averages 30.6 points a game. Receiving continues to be a strong point for the Guards, as Micah Shirley (39 for 588 yards and eight touchdowns) and Kevin Yuenyonsakul (17 for 356 yards and five touchdowns) have combined for 944 yards. Shirley has also rushed for four touchdowns. Linebacker Alex Davidians continues to pace the Bell-Jeff defense, as he has a team-high 98 tackles (16.3 per game). “This is going to be a big game for us, because we have to bounce back,” Aguirre said.
• SOMETHING INTERESTING: The Guards have dropped out of the CIF Southern Section Northeast Division top 10.

BELL-JEFF VS. ST. GENEVIEVE
• WHEN: 7 p.m. today.
• WHERE: Memorial Field (Burroughs High).
• RECORDS: The Guards are 4-2; the Valiants are 6-0.
• LAST WEEK: Bell-Jeff defeated Silver Valley, 36-24; St. Genevieve defeated Frazier Mountain, 50-39.
• OUTLOOK: This is likely the most important game of the season for Bell-Jeff. The contest could also determine the Santa Fe League champion, as the Valiants won the title last season and the Guards finished second. Bell-Jeff will be taking on a team that has yet to experience defeat this season. Looking at the results from the teams’ common opponents this season, it appears the Guards are in for a tough battle. Both squads have faced Malibu and Frazier Mountain in nonleague games earlier in the year. While the Guards lost to the Sharks, 20-18, and the Falcons, 52-14, the Valiants earned 43-26 and 50-30 victories against the same squads. St. Genevieve has had by far the most potent offense in the league during the first six games. The team has outscored its opponents, 262-111, and averages 43.6 points a game. In contrast, the Guards have scored an average of 29.3 points a game. The closest St. Genevieve has come to a loss this season was a 10-point victory against L.A. Baptist, 31-21, on Oct. 3.
The Valiants have a fine athlete in senior Chris Navarro. As a quarterback, Navarro has completed 46 of 72 passes for 668 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions. He passed for 225 yards and two touchdowns in last week’s win. Not only can the Valiants pass the ball, but they also have a solid running game behind Navarro, who runs the option to perfection. He has gained 901 yards in 76 carries and has an eye-popping 21 touchdowns.
Bell-Jeff’s biggest offensive weapon is junior wide receiver Micah Shirley. Shirley has 39 catches for 588 yards and eight touchdowns. Teammate Kevin Yuenyonskul has 17 catches for 356 yards and five touchdowns. The Guards have gotten a great effort this season from senior linebacker Alex Davidians. Going into Friday’s game, Davidians was fourth in the state in tackles with 89, according to maxpreps.com.
• SOMETHING INTERESTING: The Valiants are ranked No. 3 in the CIF Southern Section Northeast Division and the Guards are ranked No. 7 in the same division.
