Defense Key for Bell-Jeff!

FOOTBALL: Guards limit Salesian to just one touchdown in 18-6 Santa Fe League victory at home.

MEMORIAL FIELD — The Bellarmine-Jefferson High offense sputtered and misfired during the first half of its football game against Salesian.

Although the Guards got to within inches of the Mustangs’ goal line twice during the first quarters, all they had to show for it was a field goal.

Luckily for Bell-Jeff, while its offense was struggling, its defense stepped up.

The defense kept Salesian off the board until late in the fourth quarter and allowed the Guards to post an 18-6 Santa Fe League win Saturday at Memorial Field.

“We just didn’t look very good on offense in that first half at all,” said Bell-Jeff Coach Rolando Aguirre, whose team improved to 6-2, 2-0 in league. “We made too many mistakes and that really hurt us.”

On the other side of the ball, however, the Guards controlled the game. Playing solid defense has been Bell-Jeff’s biggest forte this season, as the unit has allowed just 13 points in its last four games — which includes two shutouts.

“Our defense has come up big for us all season,” Aguirre said. “They are out there working hard all game. We sure needed that against Salesian.”

The defense recovered two fumbles and intercepted Salesian quarterbacks three times. The unit also kept the Mustangs (1-7, 0-2) from scoring on their first 13 possessions.

The Guards appeared to score first early in the first quarter when senior running back #21 Bronson Ketchum dove for the endzone on an 11-yard scamper. However, as he stretched to break the goal line, the ball popped out and was ruled a fumble.

Bell-Jeff had another chance at a touchdown with less than a minute left in the first half. The Guards drove the ball and had a second-and-goal on the one-foot line. However, a fumbled snap and an incomplete pass had Bell-Jeff facing fourth down at the 6-yard line.

The Guards had to settle for a 22-yard field goal from #54 Jairo Trujillo with 27 seconds left.

Bell-Jeff was able to add to its lead on its first possession of the first quarter — thanks to the defense. Senior defensive back #24 Javier Gonzalez picked up a fumble and ran it in from the 6-yard line at the 10:23 mark.

The Guards upped their advantage to 15-0 with 35 seconds left in the third quarter on a nine-yard touchdown run by Ketchum, his sixth of the season.

Trujillo connected on a 27-yard field goal with 5:01 left in the game to cap the Bell-Jeff scoring.

The Guards’ defense did bend a little in the final minutes, as Salesian scored a touchdown with 2:18 left.

Sophomore wide receiver #22 Micah Shirley had six catches for 93 yards for the Guards.

On Friday October 24th, Junior running back Johnathan “JT” Ticareno dislocated his elbow during the game against Silver Valley.

He was leading the JV team in rushing yards, touchdowns and tackles before his injury and his presence and leadership will surely be missed.

“JT” has already undergone several surgeries and is still hospitalized at the time of this writing and we ask that everyone continue to pray for his complete and speedy recovery.  admin-
