Camacho To Pull Double Duty!

May 2, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Bell-Jeff of Burbank’s Bryan Camacho can add another title to the two he already holds at the tiny campus.

Camacho is the girls basketball coach and boys athletic director and now will be taking over the boys basketball program in a move that will surely spread his time even thinner than it already is.

Camacho is coming off a season in which he led the girls to the Southern Section Division V-A championship and a state Div. V championship.

“It is a great challenge that I am looking very forward too,” Camacho said. “I have a great staff and we are going to do our very best for both programs.”

Camacho replaces Eli Essa, who was let go after 14 years at the helm.

Eli Essa was in Detroit on Saturday watching the NCAA men’s basketball Final Four.

Essa might also be a spectator for the 2009-10 high school basketball season after he was informed Thursday by the administration at Bell-Jeff of Burbank that they would begin the search for a new boys’ basketball coach.

Essa, who coached Bell-Jeff for 14 years, was told by the administration that they wanted to take the program in a different direction. The Guards finished 16-12 this season.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL: Eli Essa will not return after leading Bell-Jeff program for 14 years.

By Jeff Tully

Word had spread that Essa wouldn’t be returning to coach the Bellarmine-Jefferson High boys’ basketball program next season, after leading the Guards for 14 years.

“I have been getting calls from a lot of my former players from all across the country,” Essa said. “I have also heard from parents, alumni, opposing coaches and even two referees. It’s nice to know that people really care It’s a good feeling.”

Although there are rumors that Essa might have been asked to step down by the Bell-Jeff administration, the coach chose not to go into details about his departure, or the circumstances surrendering his situation.

“After 14 years it was time for me to move on,” Essa said. “I am going to take a little time off to recharge my battery, but I’m not done with coaching at all.”

Essa said he has enjoyed his time at Bell-Jeff and relished the relationships and the friendships he has been able to establish throughout the years.
