Camacho Keeping Busy At Bell-Jeff!
BURBANK - There might not be a more ambitious local coach this winter season than Bell-Jeff of Burbank’s Bryan Camacho.
After leading Bell-Jeff to the Div. V girls’ basketball state title last season, Camacho’s list of responsibilities increased significantly during the offseason when he added boys’ varsity basketball coach to his r sum , replacing Eli Essa.
And that doesn’t even include his roles as Guards’ athletic director, or teaching four physical education classes.
Camacho coached two games Monday - the boys defeated Wildwood 73-57 at the St.Monica tournament and the girls routed University of Los Angeles 71-18 at the Inglewood tournament - with barely enough time in between to drive from Santa Monica to Morningside High.
“Every minute counts this season,” Camacho said. “It was day one and I was sitting in the coaches’ office (at school) at 11 p.m. with our coaching staff wondering, `What have I gotten myself into?’
“But we’ll enjoy every positive moment we have. I’m so fortunate to have such great guys around me, because we’re going to need to lean on each other.”
The Guards had another doubleheader Tuesday night, with the boys defeating Marshall of Pasadena 66-54 at St. Monica and the girls recording a 63-51 win over Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach at Morningside.
Camacho has done everything in his power to avoid scheduling conflicts, although tournament calendars can often be unpredictable.
The boys are entered nextweek in the Viewpoint of Calabasas tournament, before playing host to their own tournament, which begins Dec. 14.
The girls are scheduled to compete Dec. 18 in the Nike Tournament of Champions in Arizona and are entered in the Ayala of Chino Hills tournament, which starts Dec. 26.
“There’s no doubt it’s going to be challenging, but I wouldn’t have taken it on if I didn’t believe in the people we have,” Camacho said.
“We have a great support group and I think it’s only going to help bring solidarity and unity between the programs and within the school.”
Camacho has benefited greatly from the presence of coaches Marc Caguco, Ana Coronado, Johnny Garcia, Michael Guzman, Leo Levid, Bobby Machuca, Jason Moore, Andrew Rife and Damien Scott, who will try to help Bell-Jeff repeat as girls’ state champion and help the boys build on last year’s 16-win season.
“We’re so fortunate that we have people who want to give,” Camacho said. “There’s going to be times where we make some mistakes, but we’re going to learn from them and become better as a result. We’re not going to let up because we don’t want to short-change any of these kids.”
The Bell-Jeff girls extended their winning streak to 22 games Tuesday.
Should the Guards get past Bishop Montgomery of Torrance at 7:30 p.m. today in the quarterfinals, Inglewood would be next in line on their path to Saturday’s final, with a possible showdown looming against Long Beach Poly.

Changing of the Guard at Bell-Jeff!
Eli Essa was in Detroit on Saturday watching the NCAA men’s basketball Final Four.
Essa might also be a spectator for the 2009-10 high school basketball season after he was informed Thursday by the administration at Bell-Jeff of Burbank that they would begin the search for a new boys’ basketball coach.
Essa, who coached Bell-Jeff for 14 years, was told by the administration that they wanted to take the program in a different direction. The Guards finished 16-12 this season.
