Etter, Oses Named To All-CIF First Team!

BJB_EttterThe Bellarmine-Jefferson High boys’ basketball team had its share of talent this past season.

But in the midst of all that talent was a consistent and formidable one-two punch in senior Abid Oses and junior Isaac Etter. The two gave the Guards a “pick your poison” aspect, as the two were rarely stopped in any given game.

The pair spearheaded a successful Bell-Jeff campaign that included a Camino Real League championship and a march to the CIF Southern Section semifinals. Oses and Etter were rewarded for their exploits Monday, when the CIF Southern Section office unveiled its All-CIF first-team selections across 12 divisions.

Oses was rewarded with his second-straight first-team selection, while Etter made the first team after being a second-team honoree a year ago.

“I think Abid and I worked well together,” Etter said. “He was really strong inside. He just worked hard all year. And for me, I just tried to spread the floor and sink some shots when the team needed it.

“Helping my team to win is always first for me. But getting an award like this is nice; it shows all the hard work has paid off for me. It’s an honor to get an award like this.”

The leader in scoring for the Guards was Etter, who averaged 17.8 points to go along with 1.9 steals and 1.6 assists per game. He was also an outside threat, converting 91 three-pointers, earning him All-Camino Real League first-team honors.

bj_bb-CIFOses averaged 14.9 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.1 steals and one block per game. He also made 20 three-pointers. Oses was a unanimous choice for league player of the year.

“I was really trying to win [the division] player of the year,” Oses said. “That really wasn’t my goal, but I was hoping for that. But you have to get to the championship game to win that.

“But winning All-CIF for two years in a row is very nice. It is good to get that in my last year at Bell-Jeff.”

Bell-Jeff (25-6) went 10-0 and won the championship in its first season in the Camino Real League. It was the Guards’ first league title since 2011, when they were a member of the Santa Fe League.

Seeded No. 1 for the CIF Southern Section Division playoffs, the Guards fell in the semifinals to No. 5 St. Bernard, 67-52.

“We would have liked to get to the championship, but it was still a very successful year for us,” Bell-Jeff Coach Julian Andrade said. “We did a lot of good things and were able to accomplish a lot, and Abid and Iassc were a big part of that.”

Shirley Earns All-CIF Award!

Football: Two athletes each from Burbank and Burroughs and one from Bell-Jeff receive honors.

Bellarmine-Jefferson High senior Macah Shirley was an All-CIF pick at defensive back. Shirley was a bright spot for the struggling Guards. Bell-Jeff (2-8) finished last in the five-team Santa Fe League.

“Micah led the league in rushing, in scoring and in tackles,” said Bell-Jeff Coach Rolando Aguirre, who played the all-league and All-Area standout at quarterback, running back, wide receiver and defensive back. “Unfortunately, we just didn’t have a quarterback that could get him the ball. That was really tough for him.”

On offense, Shirley had 119 carries for 1,210 yards (10.2 yards a carry) and seven touchdowns, hauled in 24 passes for 402 yards (16.8 yards a catch) and eight touchdowns and he completed nine of 27 passes for 200 yards and one touchdown. In addition, he scored 92 points. On defense, he had 122 tackles (12.2 a game), four interceptions and recovered two fumbles.
