2008-09 Girls’ Soccer Season Preview!

December 6, 2008 by

BURBANK — Most of the area’s girls’ soccer teams will have strong resemblances to last year’s squads.

Providence is the only local program that doesn’t have its share of talented returning players this season.

That’s because three of four programs — Burroughs, Burbank and Bellarmine-Jefferson — have a number of players who competed last season.

Here is a look at how this year’s teams are shaping up:

BELLARMINE-JEFFERSON

The Guards (3-7-1) are coming off a season in which they placed third in the Santa Fe League. That was just one season removed from winning a share of the league championship. Coach Hector Garay said he thinks his team has enough talent to make it back to the postseason, and even compete for a league crown.

“We have four seniors and about 10 juniors for this year,” Garay said. “[It] is a very good group, although we have a young team.”

Leading the group of returners is senior sweeper Taylor Nelson. Nelson is fresh from helping the Bell-Jeff girls’ volleyball team advance to the CIF quarterfinals.

Other key players include senior midfielders Vanessa Alvarado and Kelly Pablos.

“I am hoping that we are going [to be able] to make it [to the playoffs] again this year,” Garay said.
