October 25, 2009 by

• WHEN: 7 p.m. Saturday.

• WHERE: Memorial Field (Burroughs High).

• RECORDS: The Guards are 4-3, 0-1 in the Santa Fe League; the Mariners are 2-3, 0-1.

• LAST WEEK: Bell-Jeff lost to St. Genevieve, 41-38; St. Monica lost to Salesian, 41-18

• OUTLOOK: The Guards are coming off a solid performance last week against a talented St. Genevieve team. Bell-Jeff coach Rolando Aguirre said the team will not get back the services of starting quarter Philip Diaz. Aguirre confirmed that Diaz, who suffered a concussion Sept. 26 in a nonleague loss to Frazier Mountain, is no longer with the team. Senior backup Brenden Alferez has done an admirable job taking over the signal-caller duties. “Brenden is our man for the rest of the season,” Aguirre said. “He has done a pretty good job for us.” Alferez has completed 29 of 53 passes for 119 yards and has two touchdowns and two interceptions. The St. Monica offense is led by junior quarterback Matthew Partyka. “They run a no-huddle offense and they like to throw the ball,” Aguirre said. “They like to throw the ball a lot. But we have a special defense for them. Our secondary just has to step up and help us out.” The Mariners’ offense has been fairly successful, as it averages 31.6 points a game. In comparison, the Bell-Jeff offense averages 30.6 points a game. Receiving continues to be a strong point for the Guards, as Micah Shirley (39 for 588 yards and eight touchdowns) and Kevin Yuenyonsakul (17 for 356 yards and five touchdowns) have combined for 944 yards. Shirley has also rushed for four touchdowns. Linebacker Alex Davidians continues to pace the Bell-Jeff defense, as he has a team-high 98 tackles (16.3 per game). “This is going to be a big game for us, because we have to bounce back,” Aguirre said.

• SOMETHING INTERESTING: The Guards have dropped out of the CIF Southern Section Northeast Division top 10.
