Guards Open Season With A Win, Lose Martinez!

Bell-Jeff 14, Saddleback Valley Christian 7: Micah Shirley rushed for a game-high 71 yards on 12 carries, but it was his 22-yard touchdown reception from Johnny Karalis with five minutes remaining that proved to be the difference in the Guards’ victory at Burroughs High.

Robert Gomez blocked a punt in the fourth, giving Bell-Jeff the ball at the 21-yard line. The Guards converted on 4 th-and-11 when Karalis hit Shirley for the deciding touchdown, with Joshua Martinez adding the 2-point run.

Gomez also intercepted a Brandon Camarillo-Towles pass, setting up a Martinez 18-yard touchdown reception from Karalis for a 6-0 halftime lead folowing a missed extra-point attempt.

Curran John caught a 36-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Bialobreski in the third quarter, which, combined with John’s extra point, gave the Warriors a 7-6 lead.

Special Note: Sophomore defensive back Joshua Martinez was lost for the season after breaking his leg during a long run late in the fourth quarter.
