Citrus Valley On A Roll!

September 12, 2010 by

REDLANDS – It took the them the better part of three quarters, but eventually the Citrus Valley football team imposed its will.Facing their second straight small-school team in Burbank Bell-Jeff, the Blackhawks saw their defense gashed for multiple big plays in the first half.

But relying on their huge advantage in depth, and sticking to what is fast becoming their trademark hurry-up, run-the-ball offense, Citrus Valley (2-0) pounded away and wore down their opponent in a 51-24 victory at Hodges Stadium.

“They’re a much better team than what we faced last week,” Citrus Valley coach Pete Smolin said. “It was the same type of team, but a little more talented and a lot better coached and they gave us a battle. But like I said, we figured if we could hang with them in the first half then we’d be able to wear them down in the second half.”

Junior running back Jason Snow and sophomore running back Taylor Smith ran over, around and through the Guard defense all night.

The two backs combined for 475 rushing yards and six of Citrus Valley’s seven touchdowns.

But over the first 24 minutes, it did not look like it would be enough.

Despite having only 28 players on its varsity roster, Bellarmine-Jefferson showed it had plenty of firepower early on, jumping to a quick 12-0 lead on consecutive touchdown passes of 70 yards and 29 yards from quarterback Chris Issakanian to wide receivers Micah Shirley and Kevin Yuenyongsakul.

Smith got Citrus Valley on the board with a 7-yard touchdown run of his own, one of the four he’d finish with on the night, but a 97-yard run by Shirley put the Guards up 18-7 early in the second quarter.

With the defense finally forcing punts and turnovers, the Citrus Valley offense got rolling in the second half.

Smith scored three three consecutive times on runs of 4, 49 and 3 yards before Snow capped the scoring with a 31-yard run up the gut late in the fourth quarter.
