Bell-Jeff Falls To Boron In CIF Opener!

November 22, 2009 by

BURBANK Finishing third in the five-team Santa Fe League, the Bellarmine-Jefferson High football team figured it would have play a tough opponent in the first round of the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

Bell-Jeff was right.

What the Guards didn’t know is that along with squaring off against a talented team, they would have to rake a 241-mile round trip for Friday’s Northeast Division opener against host Boron.

Playing in cold conditions, Bell-Jeff put up a good fight, and had a chance to win the game late, but instead fell to the Bobcats, 36-25. “It was freezing, but our guys really played well,” said Bell-Jeff Coach Rolando Aguirre, whose team ends the season 6-5. “We had the opportunity to win the game, and I thought we should have won the game. But we had three fumbles, and that’s what killed us.”

None of the fumbles was as costly for the Guards as their final miscue. With five minutes left and Boron (9-2) clinging to a 28-25 lead, Bell-Jeff was trying to drive for the go-ahead touchdown. However, a fumble dashed the drive.

“That was it right there,” Aguirre said. “That’s what cost us the game. All three of our fumbles were returned for scores.”

Senior Micah Shirley stood out for Bell-Jeff, as he scored three touchdowns, one on an interception, another on a run from scrimmage and the third on a 78-yard kickoff return.

Shirley ends the season with 26 touchdowns.

“Micah has just played well for us all season,” Aguirre said. “And when we had to move him from receiver to running back, he did it because he knew we needed him there.”

The Guards weren’t able to add to the success they enjoyed in last year’s playoffs.

After finishing second in the Santa Fe League, the Guards defeated Fairmont Prep, 28-21, to earn their first postseason win in more than 50 years.

Bell-Jeff (8-4 in 2008) fell in the quarterfinals to Linfield Christian, 26-0.
