Revenge is sweet for Bell-Jeff!

January 23, 2009 by

Burbank – It was an act of revenge 10 months in the making for Bell-Jeff of Burbank.

And even though it was a Santa Cruz League game and not the Southern Section girls’ basketball playoffs, the host Guards played like they had a score to settle Thursday night with St. Mary’s Academy of Inglewood.

Bell-Jeff built a 10-point lead entering the fourth quarter and held off a late St. Mary’s rally en route to a 53-50 victory, atoning for last year’s 32-point loss in the Div. IV-AA final.

Margeaux Gupilan had 15 points and eight assists, Julia Tani added 11 points and freshman Rishonda Napier contributed 13 points for the Guards (20-1, 3-0), who split the regular-season meeting with the Belles last year. Shelley Gupilan recorded eight points and eight rebounds for Bell-Jeff, which prevailed, despite being outscored 13-6 in the final quarter.
