Harvard-Westlake, Bell-Jeff To Meet In Nike TOC!

The area’s top two girls’ basketball teams will not have to wait until the New Year to establish bragging rights.

Harvard-Westlake of Studio City and Bell-Jeff of Burbank will meet Monday in the semifinals of the Gray Division in the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix.

The two teams were victorious Saturday with the Guards — the defending tournament champion in the division — defeating Chandler (Ariz.) 71-55 and the Wolverines getting past Villa Park 63-59.

Bell-Jeff will host Harvard-Westlake on Jan. 5.

“I think our goal is to win the tournament. We can’t be concerned with who we are playing next. We have to take each opponent one game at a time,” Harvard-Westlake coach Melissa Hearlihy said. “If we start talking about who we are playing, we’ll lose our focus.”

Skylar Tsutsui made five of six free throws in the final 30 seconds to secure the victory for Harvard-Westlake (6-1).

She made one of two free throws with nine seconds remaining to give the Wolverines a 61-59.

Harvard-Westlake got some breathing room when Sydney Haydel, who finished with 12 points, scored in the final seconds off a pass from Nicole Hung, who scooped up the loose ball at mid-court.

Hung finished with 17 points and nine rebounds and Nicole Nesbit added 13 points.

Bell-Jeff, the defending state Div. V champions, used a strong third quarter to pull away for the victory over Chandler. The Guards (7-1) outscored the Wolves 28-15 in the third quarter to blow the game open.

Margeaux Gupilan and Leslie Lopez-Wood each had six points and the team used a 12-2 run to take over the game.

Gupilan had 17 points, five assists and five steals while Lopez-Wood added 18 points and 10 steals. Layana White added 13 points for Bell-Jeff.
