BURBANK – Bell-Jeff defeats nemesis St. Mary’s, 63-50, on the road to capture Santa Cruz League title. St. Mary’s Academy has been a thorn in the side of the Bell-Jefferson High girls’ basketball team the last three years.

Although the Guards were able to share a Santa Cruz League championship last season with the Belles, St. Mary’s decimated Bell-Jeff in last season’s CIF Southern Section Division IVA championship game.

It was payback time for the Guards on Tuesday.

Bell-Jeff made its move in the second half in the game at St. Mary’s, as it pounded out a 63-50 win to secure the league championship.

“This is a goal that we have been working to obtain for three years,” said Bell-Jeff Coach Bryan Camacho, whose team finishes the regular season 26-1, 8-0 in league. “This is an accomplishment the girls can really be proud of.”

The win gave Bell-Jeff a sweep of St. Mary’s this season, as it defeated its foe, 53-50, Jan. 22 at home.

The Guards — ranked No. 1 in Division VA — used a strong third-quarter push to get past the Belles (19-8, 5-2).

After trailing, 26-21, at halftime, the Guards went on a run in the third, outscoring their opponent, 26-11.

“That was a nice run for us; we needed that,” Camacho said. “This team just works so hard, and they showed that with how they played in the second half.”

Senior Shelley Gupilan led the charge in the third quarter, scoring 12 of her game-high 26 points. Teammate Marguaux added 18 points, with seven coming in the fourth quarter.

“Now, we are going to be focused on the playoffs,” Camacho said. “We are going to work hard to get back to the championship game.”

That playoff run won’t include St. Mary’s, as it moved up to Division III.
