Girls’ Basketball Players Among State’s Best!

August 27, 2009 by

Harvard-Westlake, Bell-Jeff of Burbank and Oaks Christian of Westlake Village are expected to be among the area’s top girls’ basketball teams in 2009-10, and the performance of their elite athletes during the summer has all three programs setting lofty goals for the upcoming season.

Cal-Hi Sports evaluated approximately 1,000 players during a series of summer tournaments and gave them all a performance rating, with a perfect score of 16 possible. Of the 234 individuals that received at least a score of 9, there were 11 that made the cut.

According to the Cal-Hi Sports editors, evaluation points are based on a dot system of four grading periods per player, regardless of how many or how few times a particular player is seen in action.

The evaluation areas consist of: speed and quickness with and without the ball; passing abilities; converting makeable shots and layups consistently; ability to pull up and hit shots; range of shooting; free-throw shooting; defensive intensity, body positioning and footwork on defense; stamina and endurance; left- and right-hand abilities to shoot and dribble; blocking out and rebounding; attitude and demeanor; teamwork; performing in the clutch; and level of competition faced.

Mater Dei of Santa Ana junior Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis topped the list at 14.7. Harvard-Westlake senior Nicole Hung was the highest local player at 13.75, ranking her in the top 15 overall.

Notre Dame senior Kody Burke was in the top 25 at 13.4, and Thousand Oaks junior Karina Alofaituli (12.4) and Harvard-Westlake senior Nicole Nesbit (11.95) were both recognized in the top 40.

Bell-Jeff seniors Margeaux Gupilan (10.6) and Julia Tani (9.3), sophomores Jasmine Smith (10.5) and Rishonda Napier (9.1) and freshman Leslie Lopez-Wood (9.95) were on the list, along with Oaks Christian senior Katie Brooks (10.0) and sophomore Brianna Barrett (9.9).

Canyon of Canyon Country sophomore Alexus Bryant also made the list at 9.05.
