Bell-Jeff Girls’ Hoop Team Is Scary Good!

July 29, 2009 by

It’s only summer, but the way the Bellarmine-Jefferson High girls’ basketball team has been playing, next season’s squad might be better than the 2008-09 group that set its share of records.

And that’s saying something, taking into consideration that last season’s team won a CIF Southern Section title and a state championship–the first squad in any sport in city history to do so.

The Guards have been playing high-level competition during the summer, competing against larger schools and programs that are ranked among the best in the state and the nation.

Bell-Jeff has defeated Long Beach Poly and San Diego’s La Jolla County Day in tournament play. The Guards actually hold a lead in the second half against Brea-Olinda before losing. Brea-Olinda was No. 2 in the nation last year until it upset No.1 in the nation Mater Dei. Bell-Jeff lost to Mater Dei by just six points this summer.

The amazing thing about the local team is it has a slew of talented freshmen and sophomores. How good is this team going to be in the years to come?

Under Coach Bryan Camacho, look for the Guards to make a significant run in next year’s playoffs.
