GIRLS’ BASKETBALL: Bell-Jeff, Sierra Canyon earn top seeds; 1-19 Louisville also gets playoff berth.

The San Fernando Valley was well represented when the Southern Section girls basketball playoffs were released Sunday.

Forty-seven area teams received berths across six divisions.

Bell-Jeff of Burbank (Div. V-A) and Sierra Canyon of Chatsworth (VI-AA) each were top-ranked and Agoura (III-AA), Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks (IV-AA), Harvard-Westlake (IV-A), Campbell Hall of North Hollywood (V-AA) and Montclair Prep of Panorama City (V-A) were all seeded in the top four.

However, the surprise of the day came when the Div. IV-A bracket was released in the early afternoon.

Louisville of Woodland Hills, a team that finished 1-19 and 0-10 in the Mission League, made the playoffs.

The Royals, whose only win came against Malibu on Jan.17 will play at No. 5 Oaks Christian of Westlake Village (20-1) on Thursday at 7 p.m.

“I can’t believe it,” Louisville coach Bobby DaCorsi said. “We could be the Cinderella special.”

After reaching the championship game in Div. IV-A last year, Bell-Jeff could make another deep run this year.

The Guards (26-1) could meet No. 2 Montclair Prep in the finals.

If that comes to fruition, it would be an anticipated rematch from the Dec. 30 championship game of theBell-Jeff tournament, which Montclair Prep won 63-62.

Sierra Canyon is another team that made the finals last year and has some unfinished business. The Trailblazers received a bye in Thursday’s first round and will play either Boron or Trona on Saturday.
Div. VI-AA has the most entrants from the area, with eight teams receiving berths.

Games involving two local schools squaring off include Burbank at Thousand Oaks in Div. II-AA, Oak Park at No. 5 Alemany of Mission Hills in Div. IV-AA and Littlerock at No. 3 Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks.

First-round games begin Thursday in all divisions except for Division VI-A. which has three wild-card games Wednesday.
