mariah_CPPPOMONA, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball head coach Danelle Bishop announced Friday that Mariah Bankhead has signed a national letter of intent to attend the university and join the Broncos’ squad for the 2013-14 academic year.

A senior at Bellarmine-Jefferson High School in Burbank, Bankhead is set to start her final season with the Guards’ girls’ basketball team next week. Last year, she helped the squad to a 24-9 overall record as the program captured its fifth-consecutive Santa Cruz League title.

“Mariah brings a good presence to our inside game,” Bishop said. “She rebounds really well and she has a tremendous passion for the game. We know Mariah will contribute a lot to our program.”

As a junior, Bankhead averaged 4.8 point and 4.7 rebounds per game. In a January win over St. Mary’s Academy, Bankhead collected 12 points and nine rebounds to set season bests in both categories.

A 6-foot-1 forward, Bankhead comes from an athletic family. Her father, Shawn, played basketball collegiately at the College of Southern Idaho and Iowa State before competing professionally overseas for five years. During his senior season at Iowa State, he helped the Cyclones reach the Sweet Sixteen stage of the NCAA Tournament.

Mariah, born in Twin Falls, Idaho, will graduate from Bellarmine-Jefferson in May 2013. Once at Cal Poly Pomona, she’ll pursue a degree in Kinesiology.
