Guards Runner up in St. Monica Tournament!

December 5, 2008 by

Santa Monica – If the recent St. Monica Invitational Tournament is any indication of things to come, then it looks like the Bell-Jeff boys basketball team is poised for a really good season.

After breezing through the first three games, that included a win over cross town rival St. Monica, the Guards faced their toughest opponent this year in the Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) Knights.

The Knights, who got to the final round by squeeking out a 49-47 win over LACES, faced a Guards team that came out firing on all cylinders, scoring both inside and out, to establish a 14 point lead with 2:30 left in the second quarter.

The Knights went on a late run to tie the score then, go up by 2 points at half time.

Late in the third quarter, the Guards fought hard and brought the score back to within 6 points, but Notre Dame went to the back to the tactic they used on LACES the night before, turning up the defensive pressure, shutting down the Bell-Jeff inside game as well as the outside shots that were falling during the first half.

After that, the Knights outside shooters went to work hitting shots to put the game out of reach.

Final score, Notre Dame 64 – Bell-jeff 52.

On a positive note, for a team that only returned one player, Alexis Bersabe (named All Tournament), the Guards now have a bench stocked with enough young talent to go 9 or 10 deep. That, paired with strong inside play from freshman center Andre Frazier, senior Javier Gonzalezale in the post, sophomore Micah Shirley attacking the hoop and senior 3 point shooter Khalil Saado , the Guards showed they have all the necessary components to seriously contend for the Santa Fe League Championship!

Go Guards!
