LOS ANGELES – Fans at Friday’s league challenge between the Bellarmine-Jefferson Guards (Burbank, CA) and the host Verbum Dei Eagles (Los Angeles, CA), saw Bellarmine-Jefferson’s basketball squad knock off Verbum Dei by a score of 50-40.

Judging by the results, new head coach Julian Andrade prepared his players well as they displayed an all out team effort fueled by a swarming defense and balanced offense.

Senior Micah Shirley (14 points/12 rebounds), sophomore Connor Linquist (10 points) and sophomore Brandon White (9 points/9 rebounds), led the team on the scoring end while juniors Jonathon Smith and Elijah Reed (5 points/5 steals) led the charge on defense disrupting the Eagles offensive game plan.

The Guards JV team started the evening with a 51-31 victory over Verbum Dei, the newest entry to the Santa Fe league.

With the win, Bell-Jeff improves its record to 6-11 (1-0 in league) for the season and host defending league champions St. Anthony on Wednesday, January 19.

The Saints come into the contest with an almost identical record of 6-10 (1-1 in league).

The Eagles now own a 3-8 record. They take the field next when they host St. Anthony on Friday, January 21.
