Santa Monica - The 2008-2009 Basketball season has finally begun and Bell-Jeff Basketball is off to a good start!
The Boys Varsity opened the season in the St. Monica Invitational by trouncing Bernstein (Hollywood, CA) 63-20 followed by a tough win against St. Monica.
Fueled by the sharp shooting of #41 senior, Khalil Saado and strong interior defense of #34 freshman, Andre Frazier-Stanley, the Guards defeated a solid Mariners team 45-41.
Up next, a Wildwood Wolves team the was crushed by St. Monica 100-54 on Monday.
The Lady Guards also kicked of their season in the Inglewood 5th Annual Holiday Classic with a runaway win over Monroe of North Hills 78-20.
Last years co-Santa Cruz League champions, the Lady Guards went all the way to the CIF Championship ultimately falling to Rival St. Mary’s 78-38 and head Coach Bryan Camacho will settle for nothing less than a Championship this year!
Both the Boys and Girls teams received an infusion of young talent who are expected to contribute right away.
Freshmen Andre Frazier-Stanley, Austin Mitsunaga, Elijah Reed and junior transfer Emery Else provide immediate help for Coach Eli Essa and a team that only had 1 retuning Varsity player (#21 Alexis Bersabe)
Coach Bryan Camacho’s Lady Guards may be even stronger this season with the addition of freshmen Rishonda Napier, Jasmine Smith and Averie-Alice Guzman. They will join three returning All CIF Players, seniors, Shelley Gupilan, Elizabeth Hawthorne and junior guard Margeaux Gupilan.
Expectations are high for both teams and the talent is there. Now it’s up to both coaching staff’s to guide their respective squads to a successful season and beyond.
