Bell-Jeff Earns Burbank Bragging Rights!

December 14, 2008 by

Burbank –  It was early Saturday afternoon and final preparations were being made for the 2008 Annual matchup between cross-town rivals Bellarmine-Jefferson and Providence.

What is unique about the these meetings and what makes them so enduring, is the fact that the whole basketball program (boys and girls) participates.

From Freshman to Varsity, this non-league meeting is an all-day event that brings out former players, faculty members alumni et al.

Just as the the annual Garfield-Roosevelt Football game brings out the masses, this “battle for Burbank” also gets everyone fired up.

All over the internet you could find MySpace pages and message boards full of talk like; “Beat the Pioneers,” “Bell-Jeff’s Going Down,””Not this Year!” etc.

I guess #23 Senior forward Elizabeth Hawthorne summed it up when she said, “I hate Providence… they’re a physical team and when I was a freshman they knocked me around pretty good so, I can’t wait to get on the court and beat them bad!”

In a unique twist of fate, one family had to deal with it in house. The Mitsunaga family has three children, Taryn, Chad and Austin and throughout the years you could find their parents, Michael and Mitzi, running all over town to various basketball practices and tournaments to help their kids develop the basketball skills necessary to play in high school.

Well, they did a great job and all three are have played and performed well. The only catch, Taryn (graduated) and Austin (freshman) went to Bell-Jeff but Chad (senior) decided to make his own way and chose Providence and the household felt the rumble.

So much so, Mitzi wore a special designed a special Providence – Guards jersey to wear to the game and she along with husband Mike sat in the stands at half court with an assortment of brothers, sisters and assorted family to cheer on the boys!

Well, Chad had a good game running circles around the defense and hitting shots from anywhere to lead the Pioneers in scoring but Austin (who came in  during final three minuets) and the Guards had the final say. With a hard foul on brother Chad, a big thee pointer late in the game and a chance to dribble out the clock for a 57-36 Guards victory.

Elizabeth also got the last word as the Lady Guards spanked the Lady Pioneers 73-13.

Freshman Boys Providence wins

JV Girls Bell-Jeff 43 – 38

JV Boys Bell-Jeff 40 – 33

Varsity Girls Bell-Jeff 73 – 13

Varsity Boys Bell-Jeff 57 – 36

All and all, this day belonged to the Guards of Bell-Jeff, winning all but one contest and in the end, laying claim to bragging rights for the year of 2008-2009 and judging by the crop of young talent on displayed at the freshman and sophomore level, for several years to come.

As for now, Providence can only say, “wait until next year!”
