All Area Squads in CIF Playoffs – Guards Advance!

February 19, 2009 by

BURBANK — It’s the proverbial good news, bad news scenario for the local boys’ basketball teams pertaining to the postseason.

The good news is that all four area squads — Burbank, Burroughs, Bellarmine-Jefferson and Providence — qualified for the CIF Southern Section Playoffs.

The bad news is that three of the four have to hit the road today for first-round games.

The lone team to garner a home contest is the Indians, who were able to advance to the quarterfinals two seasons ago.

Here is a look at the first-round matchups:

Bellarmine-Jefferson at Nuview Bridge: The Guards also had to petition for an at-large berth after finishing third in the four-team Santa Fe League.

“We were ranked in the top 10 in the division most of the season,” Bell-Jeff Coach Eli Essa said. “But even though we finished third in our league, because there’s only four teams, they only take two automatics for the playoffs.”

Essa, whose team is seeded No. 12, said his squad received some respect in the division.

Bell-Jeff (15-11) will take on the host Knights (14-3) — the Warrior League champions — at 7:30 p.m. in a Division VA game.

Nuview Bridge is located in Nuevo, a rural community located east of the city of Perris and Lake Perris in Riverside County.

“I not only had never heard about Nuview Bridge, but when I looked on [] I had never heard of any of the teams they played during the season,” Essa said. “But we are getting information on them.”

Bell-Jeff has been led by its defense, which is giving up an average of 42 points a game.

On offense, the squad is paced by Micah Shirley and Javier Gonzalez, who both average 11 points a game.
