BURBANK- Patrick Haney was two batters away from throwing a perfect game Monday for the Bellarmine-Jefferson High baseball team in a Santa Cruz League contest against Verbum Dei.
Haney did toss a no-hitter, leading the Guards to a 15-0 win on the road.
The game was called after five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.
Haney faced 15 batters, struck out nine, walked one and hit one batter.
Johnny Karalis was three for four and drove in a run, Mitch Kellogg was two for four with two RBI and Martin Pinedo was two for four with two RBI for Bell-Jeff (8-3, 5-2 in league).
