Guard Earns Top Award!

BURBANK — Jairo Trujillo wasn’t exactly thrilled with the season he had with the Bellarmine-Jefferson High baseball team.

“I had a few injuries that bothered me throughout football and baseball season,” said Trujillo, who also played defensive back for the Guards football team. “I wasn’t able to do all that [well] in baseball.”

Trujillo might be a little too hard on himself. The junior played well enough to get the attention of many of the coaches in the Santa Fe League, which voted him the league’s player of the year.

It is the fourth straight season a Bell-Jeff player has earned the league’s top honor.

“Jairo is just a great player,” Bell-Jeff Coach Hector Perez said. “He was definitely the best player in our league this season. If you looked at all the players in the league and asked which one would make the best college player, it would be Jairo.”

Along with hitting .571 with 32 hits, Trujillo also scored 32 runs, had 23 runs batted in, two home runs and a .786 slugging percentage. He also stole 21 bases in 22 attempts.

“I just want to get on base any way that I can,” said Trujillo, who played shortstop, second base and pitcher. “I just want to do anything that I can to help the team.”

Joining his teammate are Guards’ first-team selections Phillip Diaz, Danny Diaz and Patrick Haney, who were also named to the first team.

Phillip Diaz, a freshman shortstop, led the team with a .591 batting average. Along with scoring 40 runs, he had 39 hits, seven doubles and two triples. He also stole 23 bases in 24 attempts.

Haney, a sophomore first baseman, hit .457 with 32 runs batted in, 14 runs scored and eight doubles.

Danny Diaz, a senior right fielder, batted .531 with 34 hits, 24 RBI, 20 runs scored and six doubles.

Making the second team for the Guards was junior catcher Adam Cepero (.357) and sophomore utility player Tory Tunzi (.240).

Bell-Jeff (9-12) placed third in league and was defeated in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division VI playoffs by Sage Hill, 10-3.
